We specialize in truly old Chinese woods like Elm, Walnut, Rosewood, Teak, Firs, Mahagony and Beech from our China Mills. Our Montana base provides us with the young 300 year history of Fir, Larch, Hemlock, Spruce, Pine and Cedar with a reach that allows us to also work with all Hardwood species from the Americas with the proper lead time.
Artisans EcoTimber main focus is reclaimed wood featuring products that are not readily available in the US market today. At the moment the wood that we are featuring is Chinese Elm which is being reclaimed from old dwellings coming out of Northern China during these boom construction days.
This wood is anywhere from 100-500 years old with a lot of character and amazing colors. It has been pole barns, beams in homes, stables, warehouses etc. We currently own approximately 10000 cubic meters of material housed in three yards between Shanghai and Shandong Province. We also have access and/or ownership of a number of other species like Rosewood, Siberian Walnut and Oak, Teak, Magnolia and many other Asian species. These are all reclaimed products as well.
Beams from China and Asia take on a very different character and approach from our North American and European counterparts. They tend to be 3-5 meters (10-17 feet) in length and widths will vary from 20-60cm (8-24”) in diameter and more pole like than square with a mix shapes and sizes available.
Character runs from just great old growth rings and marks to worm holes, checking, knots of all shapes and sizes some nail holes, hand cut joints and miters, some hand repair work and of coarse all of the aging and normal distressing that comes with wood being exposed to the elements including freezing, thawing, sun, wind, rain and other natural impacts. |
